Artist’s Statement
I made my living as a writer in Hollywood for over twenty-five years. I worked on hundreds of episodes for many different network programs. Among them, “Wings,” “Frasier” and “Becker.”’
During those years I bought art supplies with the hope that one day I’d have the time and, more importantly, the courage to use them. That moment arrived ten years ago. I rented a studio, bought an easel, and began painting. After much trial and error, I have collected a sampling of my paintings that I’m proud to show.
I’ve come to realize that I’ve approached my paintings in the same way I developed the stories I wrote. Each has a beginning, middle, and end. And while the scripts I wrote were comedies, it wasn’t until I began painting that I found myself embroiled in mysteries. Each painting offers a new one to solve. And just as fictional characters often surprised me, so do the colors and textures in my artwork. All in all, it’s a fascinating and joyful process.
Many artists’ statements that I’ve seen are collections of words and phrases aimed at presenting their paintings as far more intentional, meaningful, and ethereal than they could possibly be. I don’t believe that my paintings are any of those things. I simply try to combine colors and textures until I’m pleased with that story’s ending.
So far, I’m happy with what I’ve achieved, and I sincerely hope you like what you see.
Thanks so much for taking a look.
Dave
